Safest way to protect stock media assets

Aside from setting up a SSL for the site what would be the safest way to secure media storage from hackers, brute force attempts, theft? Would it be safer to have media stored locally or in the cloud. Is there specific recommendations as to how best to secure and protect media assets?

You need to have SSL on your site ONLY when you use paypal PRO payment method.
There are .htaccess files in /content[n]/ folders which protect media assets from the direct download and stealing.

The safety doesn't depend on where the files are stored locally or in the clouds.
