Category images - no config? no custom size?

Hello,
i wanted to setup a custom design and layout for the categories overview. The image upload seems to generate a default image size. There is no configuration setting.

- How to change this setting? Or even disable it?
- Actually, i would like to have equal squared icons for the categories. No photo thumbnails.

There is no any special setting for the images at the moment.

2. Can you give a hint about a workaround? Can i disable/remove the image resize function?

BTW, there is only .JPG image upload for categories. Can you allow other formats as well? I would like to see PNG (alpha). Can you give a hint?

Only jpg file are supported. It is possible to add *.png format theoretically but it is unnecessary. None of my client hasn't been using *.png or *.gif images for 6 years.

There is a first-time for everything

I would like to have the option for "icons/symbols". They should stay in there original size and they have to keep their "transparency" for easy color changes. So, no option for JPG or mixed dimensions.

So far it works... though this is another core hack
I added PNG to the JPG check. Another $flag and IF to save the file with correct filename extension.

(No idea, if there is a better way to have custom icons for categories?)
